Perhaps not even Enrico Piaggio (who wanted it) and Corradino D'Ascanio (who designed it) could have imagined such a success for their scooter. A term virtually unknown at the time, so much so that the first Vespa models were advertised as "Utility Motoleggera" and "Small Two-Wheel Vehicle," partly to bring it closer to the world of cars, keeping away from that of uncomfortable two-wheelers.
