Description

Since 1998, Pro Natura has selected the animal of the year, aiming to raise awareness of endangered species in Switzerland that deserve protection. The hedgehog has been chosen for 2026, symbolizing Switzerland's diverse fauna and the inextricable relationship between humans and nature.

The obverse of the coin features two hedgehogs facing each other in profile in the foreground, highlighted by finely crafted details. In the background, a third hedgehog, depicted frontally, seems to observe its peers, lending depth and an almost fairytale atmosphere. The edge of the coin is adorned with the animal's name in the four national languages and the inscription "Tier des Jahres."

The reverse offers an artistic interpretation of the hedgehog's nocturnal world through its quills, which trace the outline of the moon. This depiction evokes the hedgehog's life after sunset and its deep connection to its natural habitat. To complete the night atmosphere, the background is dotted with small stars that make the sky and the moon easily recognizable.
