Description

The coin depicts the particles involved in the hydrogen synthesis reaction. The pearls represent the elementary particles that make up the nuclei: the small silver indentations are the neutrons and the gold-plated pearls are the protons. Hydrogen nuclei with one proton are the raw material, while helium nuclei with two protons and a free neutron are the products of the fusion reaction.

In stars, the conditions for nuclear fusion are provided by a strong gravitational field, and in thermonuclear reactors hot plasma is retained by special magnetic fields. The arrangement of lines on the coin resembles both the magnetic fields of large space objects and the stylized cross section of a toroidal fusion reactor. The coin's dimpled topography also echoes the gravitational potential near a star or black hole.
