The proud figure of Britannia has represented Great Britain for centuries, symbolizing the values cherished by the nation, such as power, resilience and fortitude. The Romans made Britannia a symbol of Britain, and she first appeared on coins around 119 AD. under the rule of Emperor Hadrian. Having disappeared after the fall of the Roman Empire, the figure re-emerged in the Elizabethan period and came to represent the maritime power of Great Britain. Since the reign of Charles II, Britannia has been depicted on the reverse of coins during the reign of every subsequent British monarch.

Perpetuating Britannia's legacy on national coins, Britannia 2024 continues the tradition with the interpretation of award-winning French author and illustrator Marie-Alice Harel, who has created a modern image of the warrior woman, poised above an incoming wave that it becomes one with the plumes of the helmet to symbolize its historic connection with the sea. The portrait of King Charles III, featured on the obverse of all coins in the series, was created by Martin Jennings.
