2023 is doubly important for rugby: beyond international competition, we celebrate the 200th anniversary of this emblematic sport. Legend has it that rugby was born in 1823 at the college in the city of Rugby in England, when William Webb Ellis started running with the ball in his arms during a football match.

The oval model, in reference to the rugby ball, represents the face of the currency with the profiles of three rugby players at different times. These act by "setting" over time. The one on the left represents William Webb Ellis, inventor of rugby in 1823, running with the ball under his arm. The second player is still running, the ball tight against him. The date 1923 is inserted under his feet. The last is a modern-day rugby player as he throws himself to the ground to score a try.

The reverse features the Webb Ellis Trophy which the winner of the 2023 Rugby World Cup will delight in wielding. To the left of the cut is the RF inscription and the Rugby World Cup France 2023 logo and on the right, the face value. The mention « Rugby France 2023 World Cup » appears around the border.
