Description
The Central Bank of Malta has issued the silver coin to commemorate the 'Centenary of the first performance of the Innu Malti'.
The "Innu Malti" is the national anthem of Malta, and was born shortly after Malta was granted a self-government measure in 1921.
It was first performed in public on 27 December 1922 during a concert given by the Elementary School Teachers' Drama Club at the Manoel Theater and it was not until Malta gained independence in 1964 that "Innu Malti" was formally recognized as the national anthem of Malta and was inscribed as such in the Maltese constitution.
The coin was designed and engraved by Noel Galea Bason and was minted at the Royal Dutch Mint. The coat of arms of Malta is depicted on the obverse of the coin. The reverse shows a portrait of Dun Karm Psaila the author of 'Innu Malti' and a portrait of Profs Robert Samut the composer of the music of 'Innu Malti'.
